[SPOILER WARNING: This post contains spoilers for episodes one to four of Game of Thrones Season 8.]
The long night may be over with the living’s worst enemy defeated (All hail Arya Stark!) but more and possibly even bigger bloodshed is just about to begin.
While the season started out pretty chill, the latest two episodes of Game of Thrones bombarded us with character deaths – from Edd and fierce Lady Mormont to her uncle Jorah and redeemed man Theon Greyjoy. The most recent one is that of sweet, loyal Missandei and we are heartbroken that she’ll never see the ocean and live happily ever after with Grey Worm, which is arguably rare in Game of Thrones. However, her last words may have set in motion the events of next week’s episode.
The next and fifth episode of the season will be featuring another big battle, this time between the armies of Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister. Dany lost two of her closest companions in the last two episodes and she is rightfully mad. All doubt that Dany will not devastate King’s Landing is gone and Missandei uttering “Dracarys” as her last words may have signaled Dany to burn the whole city to the ground regardless of how many innocent people will die. But with her dragons down to one and her army’s strength depleted from the battle of Winterfell, Cersei has a large fighting chance especially with the Golden Company at her back.
While no major character deaths occurred in the last four episodes opposed to what fans expected, fans are on high alert again after Missandei’s death, which reminded them of Game of Thrones’ infamous and shocking killing of characters. In the words of Ramsay Bolton, “If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”
After almost a decade, all fans are anxious to find out who finally gets to sit on the iron throne – and we are SO close to finding out. The secret of Jon’s parentage is already out (eight people currently possess the information, thanks to the Stark sisters who can’t keep their oath), Dany is probably going on a rage-fueled attack on King’s Landing, and Cersei is going to give her all to protect her kingdom and her unborn child. It may even be someone we are not considering for the throne, but we won’t know until May 20. The last two episodes are full of possibilities and we can’t wait to find out who wins this last war.
Whatever happens, Game of Thrones has established itself as one of the greatest masterpieces to air on television and it will be hard for every fan to say goodbye. So put on your armor and prepare to laugh, cry, scream, and cheer for your favorite characters as we get closer and closer to this show’s epic grand finale.
Game of Thrones airs on HBO every Monday at 9AM in the Philippines.
